Different personalities, experiences, and histories can leave a leader feeling baffled as to how to effectively communicate, provide meaningful feedback, and inspire positive change in their followers. Building on the current era of Industry 4.0 and Web 4.0, we frequently talk about 4.0 Leaders. This is a leader who has the skills to navigate the demands of this 4.0 era. We are still evolving from many years of productivity and production where we refer to this era and time period of leadership as the 2.0 leader. The topic of leadership training and development was largely birthed during the time of the Second Industrial Revolution, which is why we say Leadership 2.0. The skills of the leaders at this time were about directing, orchestrating, and being in charge.
The events of 2020 have caused lots of uncertainty and questions as people try to discern the best course of action. As we try to figure it out and attempt to put it into the framework we are used to we feel frustrated and overwhelmed. It is challenging AND as leaders, we have to be aware of these dynamics going on. To ask people how they are, give them a chance to acknowledge and name it and support them to find new solutions. We have to find new solutions. When we try to keep doing things the way we always have but have new limitations, it is natural to feel discouraged. Encouragement is seeing what is possible. As leaders, we have the opportunity to help people find new possibilities personally and professionally with proactive planning. Be a light. It really matters.
Understanding the conditions that cultivate insight thinking could have many applications to Executive Coaching. While some of the “activities” that are recommended to set the stage for more natural insights might not seem “new”, they provide a reason why doing an activity is useful and also help leaders and coaches to better design strategic conditions for insight.
As we move into this new era, we realize that while there is huge value in analytics, our intuition is imperative. Coming into the industry, 4.0 leaders need their intuitive leadership skills more than ever.
